2023 Archived CEDS Updates

2/23/23

The Central UP CEDS Committee met for the first time in 2023 virtually due to weather concerns. Aubrey Moore was still able to join us from Senator Peters' Office to tell us about the recently passed acts and state initiatives in the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL). Ryan presented on CEDS 101, an introductory course relating the CEDS process, getting projects funded, and the role of the US Economic Development Administration. Broadband updates were also covered.

4/27/23

The Central UP CEDS Committee met for the second time in 2023 in Escanaba. This meeting introduced the timeline for the 2024 Comprehensive Economic Development Strategy update. Economic Development priorities for the region were discussed, and the project submission process was explained.

6/22/23

The Central UP CEDS Committee met on June 22 for the third CEDS meeting of the year. Special guests Michael Larson from Michigan Energy Options and Abby Wallace from the Michigan Environmental Council presented on the recommendations for sustainable energy use in UP from the UP Clean Energy Coalition and the group discussed how to best integrate those recommendations into the next CEDS process. Broadband access, EV charging stations, and potential grant opportunities were also discussed.

The Central UP CEDS Committee met for the fourth time in 2023 in Escanaba. Special guests Dotty LaJoye, Executive Director of CUPPAD, and Matt McCauley, Vice President of Regional Prosperity at the MEDC, present on the EDA Policy Academy updates and creating a Superior CEDS, which will align with state economic development plans and procedures. Committee members were encouraged to join a mural.co board to start prioritizing goals and strategies for the 2024 Superior CEDS Update. More information is available at cuppad.org.

The Central UP CEDS Committee will meet for the last time in 2023 on December 14 in Escanaba, with a virtual option. During this meeting, the 2024 meeting schedule was approved, the Regional Housing Partnership provided an update, and the Outdoor Recreation Industry Strategy was reviewed. Current grants for energy and housing were also discussed.
